Gold medal World Champion performance for Graeme following total knee replacement at Spire Regency Hospital
Graeme Peatfield
Total Knee Replacement surgery with Mr Tahir Mahmud at Spire Regency Hospital helps World Champion get back to winning ways.
Graeme Peatfield’s knee problems stemmed back to his teenage road running days as part of his personal recurve archery training which, he subsequently had to give up as he couldn’t walk the distance required per round. This resulted in him swapping to competitive target crossbow shooting over shorter distances.
During Sweden 2013 whilst competing with his daughter Laura who was representing Great Britain for the first time his knee pain became excruciating to such a degree that he had to take taxi rides the short distance to the shooting ground. He was unable to retrieve his own arrows from the target and was allocated an assistant to help, without which he would have had to withdraw from the individual event and GB would have had to withdraw its team. Laura went on to win the gold medal in her event but it was tinged with disappointment for Graeme as he was unable to be there to see her compete and receive her medal on the podium. It was his inability to function fully in his chosen sport both training and competing that led him towards surgery.
Graeme was referred to Mr Mahmud for replacement knee surgery at Spire Regency, through his GP at Priorlegh Medical Centre in Poynton in late 2013 but, due to becoming a carer of his wife Jan. This then delayed the surgery until she sadly passed away in 2014.
Mr Mahmud held complete sympathy with Graeme’s position. The action then taken and the quick timeframes in which the operation took place, was a key attribute for Mr Peatfield and made it possible for him to then train and work towards shooting in the World Championships in July 2015.
Mr Peatfield had nothing but praise for the hospital and Mr Mahmud and his team. He was more than impressed in the overall care for himself the patient and the attention to detail in the delivery of information from the staff in relation to the procedure and anaesthetics so he knew what was happening every step of the way.
Following the operation Mr Peatfield could then progress with his training program. The crossbow used for training and competition weighs 20lbs and its draw weight is 95lb per shot, multiplied by seven days of shooting, it was very clear that fitness was a prime requisite of the training program. Graeme was now able to work steadily up to his 8 hour per day schedule which would have been a complete impossibility the year previous.
Finally, having qualified by score and competition Graeme and his daughter Laura managed to compete in the World Crossbow Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Florida representing team Great Britain. His sole focus following the operation was to be able to walk into and compete in the purpose built 40 acre shooting club in July 2015. The reality of which was just amazing for both father and daughter.

Considering having a knee replacement?
Graeme would urge you to consider how you feel now and how your knee pain impinges on your daily life, well-being and those around you. He adds there is nothing to be frightened of at Spire Regency hospital with an excellent team from pre-op, operation through to aftercare. It is important to read the leaflets of advice and exercise prior to your operation to build muscles to greatly assist recovery time.
As a shooter Graeme applied the 3 C’s of shooting but in a knee context:
Concentration – applying Spire Regency hospital advice
Co-ordination – series of physio exercises done at home
Confidence – a blend of experience and knowledge from the Spire Regency hospital team.
